Should Charities Build A Roblox Experience?

WHAT IS ROBLOX?

Roblox is an online platform and game creation system enabling users to design and share their own games and experiences. Founded in 2006, Roblox has become a global phenomenon with 70.2 million daily and over 216 million monthly active users. Its intuitive game engine, Roblox Studio, empowers users to build interactive worlds and characters. 

Roblox emphasizes safe social interaction, allowing players to explore user-created worlds (and brand-created worlds), collaborate with friends, and participate in multiplayer games. Its virtual economy enables developers to sell virtual items for in-game currency, Robux. With cross-platform compatibility, users can access Roblox on PC, mobile, and gaming consoles. Roblox's success lies in blending gaming, socializing, and creativity, making it one of the leading platforms for user-generated content and online gaming.

WHO PLAYS ROBLOX?

Over 4.6 billion Roblox accounts have been created and downloaded over 905 million times since 2016. With 71.5 million daily active users (DAU) as of the end of Q4 2023. Roughly 42% of them are Gen Alpha making it the most popular virtual playground among Gen Z and Gen Alpha.

HOW DO CHARITABLE DONATIONS WORK IN ROBLOX?

Unfortunately, Roblox does not allow direct charitable donations. However, this doesn’t mean charities are unable to monetize. It just means that messaging within the Roblox platform cannot explicitly indicate that income earned from the experience is a charitable donation or supports a mission. 

 

From Roblox’s Community Guidelines:
We also do not allow our community to solicit donations for a charitable cause on Roblox, including:

  • In-experience prompts for users to donate Robux toward a crowdfunding campaign

  • Claiming that a transaction is associated with a fundraiser

  • Stating to users that some amount of sales proceeds will be directed toward a cause

 

WHAT’S THE BENEFIT OF BEING ON ROBLOX AS A CHARITY?

Brands utilize Roblox to maintain a constant presence in front of young consumers, and charities can utilize Roblox in the same way. Having an experience on Roblox gives charities the ability to:

  1. Reach and nurture future donors by sharing their mission in a fun and engaging way

  2. Leverage their Roblox experience to increase commitments by offering their corporate partners access to their audience

  3. Host special events within the Roblox experience 

  4. Earn revenue through Roblox’s many monetization product offerings

CONCLUSION
